Onward one can take the road to the right to the valley of Zanaskar or go straight towards Laddakh.  You will stay overnight at the hotel in Kargil.

Jilabi modes are 22 serpentine circular roads which can be photographed from above and in front and whose formations can be seen from the moon. This is the reason why Laddakh is called Moonland.  Next, you will arrive at Uletopko camp site.  Although just a campsite, its location and facilities makes this campsite more desirable in many ways than a hotel. It is surrounded by peach and apple trees and is situated on a cliff overlooking the river Indus.  Electricity in the camp is generated by the Hydraulic system just next to the camp. You will spend overnight at camp with all meals.  Rest and enjoy the environment. You may be lucky enough to see some Capricorians (mountain goats).

Likir Monastery is the seat of the Learning of Buddhism where young Lamas are taught.  On the way you will also see the Magnetic Fields. To test the magnetic fields, stop your car in neutral gear and see the car move slightly due to the magnetic pull. The farming here is done in a strange way.  Cabins on the slopes of the mountain are made and for a few years they are left to gather mud and rain, etc. Later, when a substantial amount of earth is accumulated, the land is ready for cultivation. While driving to Leh, you will notice that the Indus River and Zanaskar River converge.  The Zanaskar River comes from the right and mixes with Indus which comes from the front.  It is a strange thing that during the winter the Indus River freezes and people trek over it to reach the Zanaskar. You will now enter the town of Leh and check-in at the hotel.  You will have opportunity to explore the city, previously the main station to the old caravan route for trade in central Asia.

Ghoom Monastery is the oldest monastery in the area, having been built in 1875.   The image of Mythey Buddha, which is 15 feet high, can be seen on the way back from Tiger Hill.  After breakfast, you will proceed to the Darjeeling Railway station to enjoy the World Heritage Toy Train ride up to Ghoom.

As you ride on the Toy Train, the spectacular landscape unfolds as the 2-foot gauge Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, opened in 1881, labors at about 10 mph, crisscrossing the road.  It has tiny 4-wheel locomotives (some over 100 years old) that are like living legends. One can experience the sound, smell and romance of a bygone era. The DHR was a work of genius and technological achievement of 1881. It has social and cultural importance, not to mention its beauty and outstanding universal appeal.  Due to its unique features, it is considered to be of lasting significance to mankind.

You will return to the hotel for lunch and then proceed with the city tour.

Your city tour begins with a visit to the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute/Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park & Snow Leopard Breeding Centre.  The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute was started in Darjeeling when Tenzing Norgay climbed Mount Everest. To the present day, only the monks of this monastery enjoy the title of 'Tasang' or pure monks. The importance of this monastery grew with time and reached its peak when it was decided that only monks from this monastery could anoint the reigning sovereign of the land with holy water.

Pemayangtse monastery follows the Mindroling tradition and also holds the lineage of Lhatsun Chenpo.  Mindroling monastery was founded by Minling Terchen Gyurme Dorje whose famous daughter, Jetsun Migyur Paldon, lived near Pemayangtse and taught there during her exile. Her stone throne can still be seen in this monastery, which houses 108 monks. The main attraction of this monastery is the wooden replica of Zangdog Palri, the celestial abode of Guru Padmasambhava and built by Serdup Lhundrup Dorje Rinpoche in 1971. The annual chaam, or monk dance, is held here on the 28th and 29th days of the 12th month of the Tibetan lunar calendar.

At an altitude of 1,750 meters, Gangtok became the state capital in the mid-19th century and has undergone rapid development since then. According to legend, it is believed that after years of meditation, the first Karmapa was visited by ten thousand fairies that came to congratulate him, each offering a strand of her hair as a gift. The hairs were said to have been woven into a black hat, which was passed down and is still at the Rumtek Monastery to this day.  It is said that the hat will fly away unless it is held onto by the wearer (who, of course, cannot be anyone else but the Karmapa).
You will also visit the Enchey Monastery which is perched on a ridge above Gangtok.  It is nestled within lush woods and offers a spectacular view of Gangtok town.  It was built in 1910 on the site of the hermitage of the great tantric saint, Lama Drutob Karpo, renowned for his powers of levitation. Today this monastery is home to the monks of the Nyingmapa Order of Tibetan Buddhism.

Next on the itinerary is the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology.   This unique organization was established in 1958 and is located amidst a serene surrounding of oak, birch and ash.  Built in the traditional style, the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology promotes research in Mahayana Buddhism and in the language and tradition of Tibet.  It houses one of the world's largest collections of rare books and manuscripts on Mahayana Buddhism. The Institute also offers a retail outlet where related books and commercially produced crafts and religious art of Tibet can be bought.

Near the institute you can also see two exquisite stupas, the Do Drul Chorten, built to commemorate the victory of good over evil, and the Jhang Chub Chorten, erected in memory of Thrukshik Rinpoche. The latter was an ardent devotee, a great spiritualist, and interpreter of Buddhism. Also nearby are two giant statues of Lord Buddha and Guru Padmasambhava, also known as Guru Rimpoche, the patron saint of Sikkim.

Your next destination will be the Directorate of Handloom and Handicrafts.  This Directorate was set up to promote traditional Sikkimese art and handicrafts.  Its exhibitions feature exquisitely carved wooden friezes, intricate bamboo work, as well as beautiful hand woven carpets and handlooms.  Not only can visitors purchase these items here, but they also have the opportunity to see the artisans at work.  One popular item, among others, is the ‘choktse,’ a wooden table with carved panels that can be folded into a portable pack.  You will then spend overnight at the hotel.

The trip from Gangtok to Kalimpong is 80 kilometers and takes approximately 3 hours.

kalimpongAfter breakfast at the hotel, you will drive to Kalimpong.  At an altitude of 1,250 meters, Kalimpong's location is ideal for a pleasant, relaxed getaway. The mild weather has made Kalimpong's orchids and gladiolas famous.  Until the early 1700s, the Kalimpong area was part of Sikkim raja's domain.  In the early 18th century, however, it was taken over by the Bhutan king.  In 1865, after the Anglo-Bhutan War, the area was annexed to Darjeeling.  Scottish missionaries arrived in the late 1800s and the town thrived as a wool trading center with Tibet until the 1950s. Today it is a quiet hill resort and a haven for retirees.  You will spend the afternoon touring the city of Kalimpong.

One point of interest in Kalimpong is its Flower Nurseries. The mild climate of Kalimpong is ideal for the cultivation of flowers and plants.  These famous nurseries export exotic flowers such as amaryllis lilies, anthuriums, roses, gerberas, dahlias, gladiolus, as well as orchids and cacti.

You can also visit Zang Dog Palri Fo-Brang Monastery. This is a fairly new monastery located in Durpin Dara. En route to Dr. Graham’s Home is the Tharpa Choling Monastery at Tirpai Hill.  It belongs to the Yellow Hat sect of Lamas. This is the sect of lamas to which the present Dalai Lama belongs.

Thongsa Gumpa is another local monastery of interest.  It is of Bhutanese origin and was built around 1692.  It is the oldest monastery in Kalimpong. The original structure was destroyed in the inter-clan wars before the British arrived.

The Golden Triangle Tour is where seekers of India begin their voyage of discovery.  First, cradled within the essence of India is Delhi, a rich tapestry of contrasts so characteristic of this complex land.  Next is Agra, the zenith of art and enshrined romance.   The enjoyable city of Jaipur exudes with color.

Delhi
As India's capital and a major gateway to the country, contemporary Delhi is a bustling metropolis which successfully combines both the ancient and the modern.  Its strategic location has historically made it the city of choice for successive dynasties’ seat of power.  New Delhi also reflects the legacy left behind by the British. The division between New & Old Delhi is a reflection of the capitals of the British and the Moghuls respectively.  Thus, wherever you go, you will invariably confront the city's past.

Day 2
Delhi

After a hearty breakfast, you can enjoy a full day touring the old & modern capital city of India.  Of special interest is the Jama Masjid, the largest mosque in India.  Built by Shah Jahan, the construction was started in 1644 and was not completed until 1658. The massive Red Fort was also built by Shah Jehan from 1638 to 1648.  You will visit Chandni Chowk and Rajghat, the cremation site of Mahatma Gandhi.  View the India Gate, the Presidents House and the Parliament.  Visit Humayun's Tomb which, built in mid 16th century, is an early example of Mughal architecture.  Next you will see Qutab Minar. Jaipur has been fancifully described as a “solid strawberry cream cake” or, more popularly, as the “Pink City.” The capital of Rajasthan is indeed impressive in its planning.  Built in 1727, Jaipur draws its name from an astronomer-prince Sawai Jai Singh II.  Ringed by a crenellated wall which is punctuated with seven gates 22 feet high and crisscrossed by well laid out avenues, Jaipur offers visitors a dazzling sight of gardens, palaces, forts and intriguing bazaars.

En route you can see the façade of Hawa Mahal (The Palace of Winds) built in 1799.  Amber Fort was the ancient capital of the state until 1727 when Jai Singh decided to move from his hillside fortress at Amber to a new site on the plains. The construction of this fort began in 1592 by Raja Man Singh, who was the Rajput commander of Akbar's army.  It is a superb example of Rajput architecture and is stunningly situated on a hillside overlooking a lake which reflects its terraces and ramparts.  Enjoy touring the Jagmandir, or the hall of victory, glittering with mirrors, Jai Mahal and the temple of Kali.  You can also ride an elephant up the hill on which the fort is situated.
In the afternoon, you will leave for Agra.  On the way you can visit the abandoned Mughal city of Fatehpur Sikri, which was built by Emperor Akbar in 1569.  This is the old capital of the Mughals and was abandoned after 15 years due to scarcity of water.  As you continue your drive to Agra, you will view other graceful buildings including Panch Mahal, the Jama Masjid, Tomb of Salim Chisti, and other palaces which are still preserved in their original glory.  Upon arrival in Agra, travel representatives will assist you with transferring to your hotel.  You will be served dinner and stay overnight at the hotel.
